How to tie a uni knot for attaching the backing to the reel

Learn how to tie the Uni Knot or (Universal knot) which is a great knot for attaching the backing to the spool of your reel ready to wind on. This is our preferred knot but there are also other knots available for the same purpose.

TIP

The uni knot can be used for many fishing applications, from attaching the backing to the reel, tying on a fly, or using a double uni knot to tie two pieces of tippet together.

When tying on a fly, try teasing the knot back after pulling tight to allow you to fish your fly on a swinging loop. This is great if you want your hook to sit further back from your tube if fishing with a long winged fly.

If fishing a team of flies (buzzers) for trout, fish each fly on a loop. If you start getting takes but don’t know which fly or what depth they are taking, look to see which knot has pulled tight. You now know what pattern or depth is working straight away.

We use the Uni knot for:
  • Tying Backing on to spool.
  • Attaching flies to leaders.
  • Double Uni Knot – for attaching two leaders of different diameters
